Sykesville Past and Present: A Walking Tour
Sykesville Past & Present: A Walking Tour is a fascinating story spanning the 170-year history of a small Maryland town. It provides as well a walking tour with illustrative photographs of the buildings on Main Street and the homes on Springfield Avenue. The narrative is based on the stories of local residents, previous reports, and original research. A unique yet all-American story, the narrative in Sykesville Past & Present unfolds in the context of the railroad’s western expansion and the development of a state-financed mental institution. Author Linda Greenberg identifies and explains the reasons for the town’s growth and discusses the economic and social forces that shaped it. She is a former Sykesville resident and previously wrote and published books in other fields. Local historian, Duane Doxzen, wrote the Introduction summarizing the major events shaping the town’s history from 1825 to 2000. The walking tour discusses the buildings along Main Street, the homes on Springfield Avenue, and other historic sites outside the town limits. Five maps give a comprehensive guide. Two of the buildings on Main Street are the former 1909 Arcade Building and the former 1948 Sykesville Fire Department Building The Greenbergs, through Greenberg Properties, in 1989 bought the Arcade building and modernized it. In 1995 they bought the Firehouse and converted it to office space. This is the fourth edition of a book first published in 1987. Over 70 photographs, with emphasis on showing how Main Street buildings changed over time. ISBN 0-9678905. 8-1/2” x 11”. 80 pages.
